VA Community Care

Summary of Community Care Benefits for Acupuncture, Chiropractic Care, and Physical Therapy

Your VA healthcare provider has requested a course of treatment (such as acupuncture, chiropractic care, or physical therapy) as part of your treatment plan.

This special care is meant to improve how you feel and help you to become more active so that you can enjoy a quality life. This treatment will be provided by clinical professionals outside of the VA.

TriWest Healthcare Alliance (the VA insurance partner) will help coordinate this care that you will receive in the local community.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture trial

Veterans who have not had acupuncture before, are offered an initial treatment trial:

  • 12 visits over 60 days, or about one visit every five days.

You can request to extend this initial treatment trial.  This will include:

  • 8 additional visits over 90 days, or about one to two visits every two weeks.

Continued acupuncture care

If this treatment is helpful to you, additional visits may be requested (sometimes a specialist will see you before this is approved).  Continued acupuncture care will usually include:

  • 8 visits over 180 days or about one visit every three weeks.

If the care continues to be helpful to you, the service may be renewed, after the end of the 180-day period.

An additional clinical evaluation may be required after the 180-day period, to review your personal care needs.
